Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) Accelerated Resolution Therapy
Evidence-Based Healing for Trauma, Anxiety & More
What is ART?
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is an evidence-based psychotherapy that uses bilateral eye movements to help clients safely and rapidly process traumatic memories (typically within 1-5 sessions). The brain's neural processes of neuroplasticity and memory reconsolidation allow the brain to "rewire" the old memories and behaviors. ART minimizes or eliminates the disturbing images, triggers and physical sensations related to trauma. Although the painful memories are altered, the client keeps the knowledge of what actually happened.
A Unique Integration: "Top-Down" & "Bottom-Up" Approaches
ART is distinctive because it integrates both therapeutic approaches simultaneously:
🧠 Top-Down Therapy
Works with thoughts, beliefs, and the "thinking brain"—helping you change the way you think about and interpret experiences. Only 20% of the information coming through the conscious mind reaches the body.
💓 Bottom-Up Therapy
Addresses the body's physiological responses created by the "emotional brain"—working directly with triggers such as physical sensations, nervous system reactions, and trauma stored in the body. The brain interprets and retains 80% of the information it receives from the body.
Understanding Your Brain: The "emotional brain" (the amygdala) alerts us to danger by triggering memories of painful events to help us avoid dangerous situations. ART communicates with this part of the brain through visualizing images, creating metaphors and noticing sensations. This part of the brain does not have language, logic, reasoning, or the concept of time. This is why triggers can create sensations that feel like something is happening now, instead of decades ago.
The pre-frontal cortex (the "thinking brain") is the only part of the brain that understands our location in time and space and can use language to communicate.
